Inland waterways news from around the world
When you think of Boatshed you may think of sail boats, motor boats, power boats and performance yachts, but quite a few of our brokerages list both coastal and inland boats.
As we now have brokerages in 15 countries worldwide I’ve kept an eye on the inland waterways news from around the world this week.
Headlines have included: Holland’s Gay Pride canal parade, adopt a UK canal, and drunken New York woman drives into a canal.
Canal Pride
A football boat is to join this year’s Gay Pride canal parade as part of the Dutch football association’s ‘football for everyone’ campaign. They are aiming to increase the acceptance of homosexuality in Dutch football. Gay Pride has been held in Amsterdam since 1996 and this year the canal parade will be held on August 3rd.
Adopt a canal
Meanwhile, in the UK the Canal and River Trust has asked community groups to adopt a canal. The newly formed charity was a year old on 2nd July and recognises the importance of attracting more volunteers. They have suggested that local residents could adopt a one-mile stretch of canal or river to improve their local waterway. Regular maintenance and repairs will still be undertaken by the Trust but this campaign will help local people shape the future of navigations in their immediate area.
Woman drives into canal
And finally, The San Francisco Chronicle reported that a New York woman is facing drink-drive charges after she drove her car into the Erie Canal. Mary Ellen Dibrango drove down a boat ramp into the canal and was able to climb out of the window as the car sank. She asked rescuers where her grandchildren were, prompting a search of the water. However the children were later found safely at home.
